WiMAX Laptop dan USB Dongle 802.16e

Inilah  beberapa jenis terminal WiMAX dan laptop dari 2 vendor ternama yang telah dilengkapi dengan WiMAX di frekuensi 2,5GHz yang saat ini telah bisa dinikmati oleh pengguna WiMAX di XOHM (Clear.Net) di Amerika Serikat. Menurut Intel selain untuk frekuensi 2,5GHz, rencananya tahun ini juga akan juga tersedia laptop dengan kemampuan WiMAX di frekuensi 2,3 GHz.

Jika benar kebijakan Pemerintah hanya mengijinkan pemenang tender spektrum BWA di pita frekuensi 2,3 GHz hanya boleh mengimplementasikan standar 802.16d, kita semua di Indonesia tidak akan bisa merasakan manfaat ekonomis dan keunggulan dari berbagai perangkat WiMAX 802.16e ini dalam waktu dekat ini.

Bandingkan terminal (CPE) WiMAX yang menggunakan standar 802.16e tersebut diatas dengan yang terminal CPE menggunakan standar 802.16d dibawah ini :

WiMAX Outdoor CPE (802.16d)

This subscriber station (SS) series is an outdoor type customer premise equipment which is a fully – integrated antenna. It can be mounted ona mast, slightly above the building roof. It has multi- service QoS mechanism, so the end-users can browse web pages, download files, sending e-mails, making voice call and watch streaming video simultaneously.The NLOS transmission capability enables moreflexible way to install the device. Diharapkan dengan penggambaran tersebut diatas akan terlihat jelas perbedaan antara WiMAX 802.16e dan 802.16d dari perangkat WiMAX disisi pelanggan.  Portabilitas jelas menjadi perbedaan kedua standar ini, dimana untuk WiMAX standar 802.16e lebih mudah dalam proses instalasi dan penggunaannya sangat sederhana. Sedangkan untuk standar 802.16d saat ini terminal yang tersedia hanya dalam bentuk terminal outdoor dan pemasangannya  cukup rumit.

Dari sisi harga terminal, saat ini telah tersedia perangkat WiMAX 802.16e dengan harga yang cukup terjangkau dibawah $100. Sedangkan untuk terminal yang menggunakan standar 802.16d, harga perangkat terminal dari beberapa sumber diketahui masih berada dikisaran $ 300.
